How Will Government Initiatives Help Reduce Plastic Waste?

To contain air, land, and marine pollution, manufacturers, governments, and customers are changing their patterns of plastic consumption, recycling, remaking goods that are easily processable post-use, and overhauling the traditional lines of production, to generate a low volume of plastic waste. All this has been a result of the increasing awareness regarding the harmful impact of plastics worldwide. Due to these reasons, the recycled plastics market is set to advance at a CAGR of 8.5% between 2021 and 2030. At this rate, the market will swell from $59,777.3 million in 2021 to $124,314.1 million by 2030.

It is the fast-paced industrialization and commercialization that have led to an increase in the consumption of plastic products. Because of this rise in consumption, a high volume of plastic waste has been generated in recent past. As per National Geographic, since the 1950s, 9.2 billion tons of plastic has been generated, of which 6.9 billion tons are now waste. The problem is that of this, merely 1.6 billion tons has been sent for recycling, with an even smaller volume actually being recycled. To deal with the issue, governments across the world have imposed certain regulations on the use of plastic.

Recycled Plastics Market Growth

According to P&S Intelligence, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for the highest volume of plastic recycled, due to the large-scale import and availability of domestic waste. As per data by the Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development, around 70% of plastic waste imported by APAC nations in 2016 was from high-income countries. In addition to this, cheap labor allows for smooth labor-intensive operations such as sorting, collection, and cleaning in APAC nations. Both these reasons assist in the development of small- and large-scale reprocessing facilities in India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

As a result, the European recycled plastic market is expected to showcase rapid growth in the future. This can also be ascribed to the several steps taken by the government to increase local production, development of domestic recycling facilities, and targets of environmental sustainability that aspire to recycle plastic products across the supply chain. European countries are expanding the capacities of their recycling units to deal with the growing plastic waste in the region.

Thus, a decline in the consumption of virgin plastic and increase in the number of recycling and reprocessing units are expected to drive recycling activities in the foreseeable future.

Keeping Equipment of Data Center Power in Good Shape

Everything requires care and maintenance. Whether it is, your health, vehicles, business, or anything. There is a small part of all the significant things that we need to be mindful of. And, the data center is no exclusion. If you want excellent performance from the data center while maintaining a high level of dependability and obtainability, you should put effort into the system that allows you to uphold the performance level.
Why Maintenance is Needed?

The answer to this is a yes. Most data center operators lack time or resources for the required maintenance procedures. Some data center providers postpone maintenance. But in the data center, devoid of regular maintenance, there is a risk of a stop or will affect the performance.

For instance, a filter in the dusty air conditioning unit can upsurge fan power. The loss of output results from a lack of maintenance and can affect performance. The lack of proper maintenance, like power management leads to deterioration. The problem is that people take action when the system breaks down. Very few people notice the degrading performance of the system.

Data Center Power Industry

Therefore, the problem may not essentially occur unexpectedly. They can remain unnoticed and cause poor performance, and incur a cost. Most data centers, do not do a widespread analysis of downtime for determining the causes of loss of performance. Often, the administrator gives more time for backup and monitoring. And often the cause of downtime is insufficient maintenance. Proper maintenance avoids downtime.  Approximately 30-40% of system outages are because by equipment failure and can be prohibited apt maintenance.

What is in Need of Maintenance?

Everything. Though, one system requires less maintenance, the other more. For instance, transformers, power distribution units, and the air distribution system and water require slight maintenance, while modules CRAC, fire extinguishers, chillers, and generators require high maintenance. Other equipment, like UPS, requires a medium level of service. But all data center systems require some amount of service. It is correspondingly applicable to all systems, dedicated servers, storing, networking, and power equipment.

Priorities of Maintenance

Maintenance is a priority for data center administrators. Obviously, data center managers face numerous challenges, from the coordination of management and mechanical personnel to the preparation and monitoring of equipment upgrades and everyday operations. Though despite all these errands, upkeep should not suffer, and with a proper strategy and timetable maintenance tasks will not suffer.

Here is a list of zones, which should be properly maintained:
• Batteries
• Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
• Power generators
• The cooling system, air conditioning, and ventilation
• The power switching gear, ATS, PDU, and circuit breakers

Often the upkeep of equipment might seem tedious and sometimes pointless.  But, mark my words, it is essential. Regular maintenance increases the efficiency of systems for the data center. There will be fewer power outages when all the power generating equipment is properly maintained. There is a need for uninterrupted power in data centers, because of the generation of data in bulk, and also for smooth operations. The demand for data center power will reach a value of about $33,380 million by the end of this decade.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is widely utilized in the automotive and food & beverage sector. In the automotive sector, it is highly utilized in heat treatments, welding processes, cutting and surface coatings, and others. Similarly, in the food industry, gas is utilized at varying stages of packaging and processing, including the transportation of food products.

Inert Gases

Argon is present in the air that we breathe, and it is extracted by forced distillation, while helium is extracted through methane. These inert gases are only gases that emerge naturally, and hence they are expensive as compared to the Xeno,n, Crypto, and Neon. These gases are utilized in the MIG and TIG welding.

Argon is used to weld non-ferrous metals, it does not mix effectively during the welding process with the molten pool, and it limits the blowholes inside by alleviating the micro-pores.

Oxygen

By utilizing the electrolysis process, oxygen is extracted from water, and fraction distillation is utilized for its extraction from the air. Oxygen can be combined with numerous natural elements, and it serves as an ideal additive in the blends of helium and argon. In addition, oxygen cannot be combined with inert gases.

Therefore, industrial gases are highly utilized to carry out the industrial processes and hence keep the operations ongoing and cater to the requirement of people and thus improve the life standards of mankind.

Growing EV Sales Driving Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Activities

According to the United Nations, 25% of the global greenhouse emissions are caused due to transportation systems. Governments across the world are therefore promoting electric vehicles over those driven by hydrocarbons. It is resulting in the increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries, as they are the primary energy source of BEVs. However, used batteries pose a risk to the environment and can cause a fire or poisoning. The disposal of lithium-ion batteries from EVs is thus a real challenge, which increases the scope of the battery recycling technology.

As a result, the lithium-ion battery recycling market is expected to reach a value of $991.5 million by the year 2030. Various materials are used as electrodes in these devices, such as a combination of lithium and cobalt oxide in the cathode and graphite in the anode. Moreover, lithium–manganese oxide and lithium–iron phosphate are other cathode materials. Ether is the most-commonly used electrolyte in Li-ion batteries, which are extensively utilized in electrical energy storage systems, electronic devices, and small and large appliances, apart from EVs.

Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling

The leachate inside the lithium-ion battery is hazardous to organisms; it seeps with rainwater inside the ground and contaminates the surroundings. The leachates contain pollutants such as heavy metals, electrolyte degradation by-products, additives, as well as dissolved gases, such as SO2, HF, or HCl. Such chemicals are not only outright toxic but also alter the properties of groundwater, by polluting it. The acidification poses the same threat as acid rain; it lowers the pH and thus affects the plants and animals.

The increasing adoption of smart electronic gadgets by the middle-class population, due to the changes in its lifestyle, drives the demand for Li-ion batteries. Moreover, the extensive investment in the IT sector leads to a high demand for consumer electronics, thus resulting in a surge in the requirement for such power sources. Additionally, the higher energy density of these energy storage devices gives them a long operational life, which is imperative for portable consumer electronics.

Therefore, the demand for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries is rising due to environmental concerns and the limited reserve of lithium. The underground disposed of batteries can slowly burn for long periods, leading to further contamination of the surroundings by harmful chemicals.
